Book Design Project

Back to Portfolio

This was a full book design package, including the interior block, four different dust jackets for the separate editions (Limited, Special, Contributor's and Smell the Roses editions), designed endpapers and foiling artwork for the dust jackets and boards.

Sadly, the author passed away before completing his manuscript, he had already completed a large volume of work on it and so the family decided to go ahead and publish what Rod had done, I hope he would have been very proud of it.

As well as many photographs, I also had lots of stunning artwork to use, including several portraits of Rod. He wrote this book as a reflection of his past, it seemed to flow in chronological order of age. I had the idea to use the portraits as chapter openers, using them in approximate age order. I also used snippets of text from the chapters to create little quotes to accompany the artwork, plus Rod’s favourte saying 'Don’t forget to stop and smell the roses'. I used earthy colour tones to suit his personality and interests, the foiling was done in copper.
